Audio Nirvana rear loaded horn project
Here's a single-driver project that's beginning to grow in my thoughts. I'm just amazed at the tone of the Audio Nirvana Cast 10 driver and can't help but wonder if it sounds as good in a rear loaded horn as it does in a T/L.
So, here's my rendition of a bass horn. You'll notice that there's no parallel walls, and it's not massively wide, or deep. It is tall, but I can accept tall objects more readily than wide. Due to its small mouth, a corner may be required to continue the horn flair/bass response.
Everyone with a bit of DIY experience has a favorite speaker/driver combination, and mine happens to be the Audio Nirvana 10 inch cast unit. It sounded extremely good in my last T/L project and is good looking and affordable. With its low Fs (35hz, I believe) it could be a natural in this full range horn. I sold the T/Ls and find myself missing them more and more. The T/Ls only drawback was the bass response--it fell off and required a bit of EQ. Once the bass signal was inhanced, listening to music became a true joy. This horn may eliminate the need for an EQ altogether, thus simplifying the signal chain which results in a cleaner output.
Current direction of project: After hearing a large, full range, rear loaded horn, I must say I've lost confidence in the concept. I happen to be very sensitive to phase anomalies, and time smear. I heard both these flaws in the large, full range, rear loaded horn I listened to. Of course, one mans poison is another mans medicine.....
